DECLAN DEVINE felt Derry City got what they deserved after a 'sickening' 95th Shane Griffin wonder strike saw the Candy Stripes slump to a second away defeat of the season.

Shane Mallon had put Derry ahead with a neat finish on 32 minutes but Sam Bone's thunderous strike on the stroke of half-time got Waterford back on terms.

And with Derry hanging on during stoppage time, Griffin curled a spectacular effort into the net to give Waterford a first home win of the season at the third time of asking.

It was a night to forget for Devine and his lacklustre troops and the Creggan man insisted they must improve quickly before they entertain Sligo Rovers next Friday night.

"We got what we deserved," he insisted. "It was a very poor performance and we didn't create enough opportunities," he said honestly.

"We were very poor with the ball on the night. It was two world class goals they scored but at the same time Waterford were better than us and full credit to them.

"On the back of a good positive result last week I thought we had more in us in terms of our character and ability on the ball. The pitch was difficult but there's no excuses. We were very poor on the night.

"We were hanging on for 1-1 and to be fair to Griffin he stuck one in the top corner from distance but the general story tonight was were weren't good enough."

Devine felt his team's game management was poor on the night but he took his share of the blame for the performance.

"I was very disappointed that when we went 1-0 up away from home, our game management was very poor.

"When you're away from home and there's couple of minutes left you've got to make sure you come away from something

"We weren't able to do that. We will go back to the drawing board and see where we are.

"I'm very disappointed with myself included because I picked the team that went out there tonight and we weren't good enough and didn't do enough to get anything from the game."
