The list of the most popular girls’ names for children born in Ireland last year included some surprises, showcasing the revival in parents opting for gaelic names. But what do the most popular names chosen by parents here mean?
Here we present the top ten girls’ names from 2023 with some detail about their origin.
Just missing out on the top ten names chosen for baby girls were the first names Isla, Hannah, Sophia, Lucy, Ava, Sadie and Olivia.
The beautiful name Eabha is joint 8th and is another of the Irish names making the top list. The name means life or breathe of life and is the Irish version of Eve, which has Hebrew origins. Another beautiful name rounds out the top 10 for girls names in Ireland- Ella. The name, like some of the others on the list has origins spread out across countries and cultures and various meanings attached to it ranging from 'other' to 'fairy maiden'.
